It sits on land once granted to Maria Hitchcock, as part of Governor Darling’s ‘marriage portions’ scheme. This scheme granted women portions of land upon marriage as a way to encourage bachelors of respectability to marry women of good standing in the community despite a lack of inherited wealth.
