In January 1840, Hyndes sold the 2000 acres to John Terry Hughes. Hughes was the nephew of successful landowner and pastoralist, Samuel Terry. By February 1843, Hughes was in financial difficulty and by the 1850's when he defaulted on his loan the land was conveyed to Adolphus William Young. In 1855, the property, known then as Big Island, went up for public auction as the Big Island Estate. The Estate divided the 2000-acres into 5 sections. Property Speculators, John Fitzgerald Burns, George Withers and Robert Burdett Smith sold the chunk of land as the ‘Wahroonga Heights Estate’ in 1893. The land was transferred many more times but the residence was only constructed in 1966.
