Regional DevelopmentLocalSocial HistorySydney - NorthernSydney SurroundsHeritage Assessment Authors: Dr Sue Rosen, Martin Pickrell, Liz Gorman Client: Private Client We prepared this HIS to support the client's proposal for a two-storey extension to the rear of their non-heritage listed property, with retention of the existing dwelling. Charles Carey Lance purchased the land parcel in 1909. At this time, Charles Lance was one of three Commissioners of the Sydney Harbour Trust. Lance had returned from a 5 year appointment as Commission Agent for NSW in London. Prior to this he had been General Manager of the NSW Creamery Butter Co. and subsequently, the Fresh Food & Ice Co. Lance sold off the land gradually, breaking it up into its three component lots; Lot 35 being 48 Chester Street. The residence at 48 Chester Street was built either under Lance’s title (with the intent to sell as a developed property), or very early on during the next proprietorship, c. 1922.
