Sue Rosen Associates were commissioned by George Demien to assess the heritage impact of the multi-unit residential development at 77 Ridge Street on the heritage qualities on the Ridge Street Cottage Group.
The study area is part of the Gordon Heights Estate which was created on part of the 220 acre Bean’s Farm on the western side of the present Pacific Highway. Subdivision of Bean’s Farm was commenced by James Hamilton, spurned in part by the proclamation of Ryde Road in 1884. The Gordon Heights Estate was eventually put to market in 1896.
Ridge Street, Gordon was originally a dead end, which became part of a loop road to Vale Street. The early residents were small business operators, including a carter, bootmaker, draper and builder, the street being ideally suited for those with premises on Lane Cove Road. A number of the families lived there for more than one generation, sub-diving lots to house younger generations. The houses identified as part of the Ridge Street Cottage Group, were generally passed on to the next generation.
