Cangoura has a particular association with an important and well documented settler story of friendship, between the Suttor family and the local First Nations people. 

William Suttor Jnr built Cangoura in 1872-1873 and is also the author of Australian Stories Retold and Sketches of Country Life, published in 1887, which he wrote while resident at Cangoura and in which he documents the 1823-24 conflicts with the local Wiradjurie, one of the most documented and significant of settler-Aboriginal relationships and narratives. Suttor was also a grazier and politician. He was a member of the NSW Lower House (1875 – 1880) and the NSW Upper House (1880-1895). He was Minister for Mines in 1877-1878; a participant in the federal conventions that led to the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia; founding president of the Pastoralists Union of NSW in 1890 and a council member of the University of Sydney’s Women’s College, 1891-1897.
