Hank was a survivor of the Burma-Thai railway, having been captured by the Japanese in Dutch East Indies. After the war, he qualified as an engineer in Holland and emmigrated to Australia where he worked as an engineer on the Snowy Mountains Scheme and on many other dam construction projects.
