Heritage Impact Statement prepared for the Client's application to subdivide No. 20 Chorley Avenue. As part of the requirements for the Heritage Impact Statement, a history of the property was compiled.
20 Chorley Avenue Cheltenham was originally part of The Field of Mars Common. The Field of Mars was set aside in 1804 by Governor King for the use of the local community to free up their own land for cropping, as grazing land was in short supply. In 1819 Governor Macquarie ordered local settlers off the Common and created a convict settlement for timber-getting.
20 Chorley Avenue is located in part of Potions 605 and 606 of the Crown’s wholesale subdivision of the Field of Mars Common following the Resumption Act of 1874. Lots 604 to 609 were purchased in 1897 by William Chorley. Subsequently the land was sold and the current dwelling constructed c.1938.
