When trying to decide where to run a road, it is particularly handy to know what you might bump into.
As part of the due diligence process, RMS commissioned an archaeological potential report to inform the construction of a bypass of the town of Picton, in the Wollondilly Shire.
Sue Rosen Associates contributed to this report by producting a historic context report, which examined patterns of historical land use, to be used as a guide as to the type and location of archaeological relics likely to be found in the area.
After a field survey, we worked with the Picton & District Historical and Family History Society in their local archive to source maps, plans, title deeds, photographs, and biographical details on past notable residents of the district to get a sense of where to focus our main research efforts. These were combined with reliable secondary sources and primary sources; Surveyor General Sketch Book maps, subdivision plans, aerials and photographs, to document the sequence of European development in the area.
