ArchitecturalLocalSocial HistorySydney - InnerHeritage AssessmentCommerceHotels Authors: Dr Sue Rosen and Liz Gorman Client: Rose of Australia Hotel This statement was completed to enable the client to carry out minor, historically sympathetic, internal alterations. The site on which the Rose of Australia now stands has been licenced as a hotel since 1878. The Rose of Australia itself was constructed from 1934-1936, in the Inter-war Art Deco style, designed by architects Prevost and Ruwald for brewer Tooth and Co. These archtects were responsible for a vast number of hotels in Sydney from the 1920's to 1940's and their designs are representative of a Sydney recovering from the Great Depression - there was a major period of hotel rebuilding and refurbishment by brewers in the interwar period.
